Free tax invoice template for Australian tradies

A tax invoice template that meets the ATO's requirements, ready to fill in. The PDF is the same invoice SmokoBooks produces, with placeholder details. The Excel version calculates GST and the total for you.

What an invoice must include

The words Tax invoice
Required if you are registered for GST. If you are not, leave them off and do not show GST.
Your business name and ABN
The ABN is mandatory on a tax invoice.
Date of issue
And a due date, so there is no argument about when it was late.
Invoice number
Sequential. It is the payment reference too.
Description of the work
What was done, where, with quantities where they apply.
GST amount
Either the GST shown per line and totalled, or a statement that the total includes GST.
Customer's name or ABN
Required on invoices of $1,000 or more including GST.
How to pay
BSB, account number and account name. Every missing detail is a phone call and a delay.

Four habits that get it paid

  • Send it the day the job finishes, from site if you can.
  • Seven-day terms, not thirty. Domestic customers can pay in seven.
  • Take a deposit on any job with materials.
  • Attach the accepted quote number so the invoice matches it line for line.

More in the guide: read it. Need the quote too? Free quote template.

Or skip the template

SmokoBooks fills this in for you, from your price list, with your logo on it.

Pick the customer, add lines, send the PDF from the app. When they say yes, the quote becomes the job and the invoice matches it line for line. GST, BAS and your books come along for free. From $19 a month.

Common questions

Is this template valid for the ATO?+

It includes every element the ATO lists for a tax invoice. Fill in your own details, keep the words Tax invoice only if you are GST registered, and it is valid.

Can I add my logo?+

In the Excel version, insert a picture in the header rows. The PDF is fixed. SmokoBooks puts your logo, colour and licence number on every document automatically.

Do I need to number invoices?+

Yes. Sequential numbering is expected by the ATO and makes payments easy to match. Never reuse a number.
